Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. Data, machine learning, and statistical models play a critical role in building the Waymo Driver and in evaluating its performance. Our team explores and implements data-driven techniques to help understand, define, and deliver desired driving behavior. The challenges involve working on algorithms to safely operate Waymo vehicles in complex scenarios such as lane changes, intersections, pullovers, etc while keeping vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists safe.  

The highly interconnected nature of our work will provide you opportunities to learn about large parts of the autonomous vehicle (AV) tech stack. Typical role responsibilities include:

  • Understand and improve the distribution of our datasets and work on the evaluation and deployment of machine learning models
  • Improve driving behavior using a range of techniques including machine learning, statistics, math, and physics
  • Prototype, develop and deploy novel solutions to open-ended problems
  • Build frameworks to enable peers and partner teams to efficiently apply data-driven methodologies towards improving car’s behavior.
  • Design and implement tools to efficiently generate training data for Machine Learning algorithms, and to optimize deep net performance
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest data-driven approaches, and be able to apply them to the autonomous driving problem

 

We'd like you to have:

  • BS or MS in Software Engineering or similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience 
  • 3+ years of Software Engineering experience
  • Proficiency in C++ or Python
  • Willingness to understand and improve a complex system and its various components
  • Experience interpreting, manipulating, and visualizing data in the presence of ambiguity (e.g., confounding factors, data sparsity or quality challenges)
  • Experience with machine learning and/or large scale statistical analysis

 

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Experience in applied machine learning including feature engineering, model deployment, A/B testing
  • Experience in data analysis and optimizing deep net performance
  • Experience developing evaluation metrics
  • Experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow
