What we offer

Volvo Cars is on an ambitious journey to redefine what it means to own a vehicle during one of most innovative times in the transport industry. We are looking to redefine all aspects of the car eco-system including ownership, autonomous driving, vehicle electrification, sustainability, and online shopping. User experience as a discipline is a key part of Volvo Cars' strategy.

Our UX organization helps to gather insights about our users and redefines and elevates the users' experience of Volvo Cars' products and services. We collaborate closely with Consumer Experience (CX), where data and insights, CX analysis, consumer journey design, CX strategy, and storytelling are key elements of our cross-functional approach.

We are approximately 130+ UX professionals and visionaries with varying backgrounds, and our roles are shaped accordingly. You can expect a varied and exciting job in a team of professionals who love their work. We collaborate and share insights across verticals (Car UX, Mobile UX, Web UX, Retail Systems, UX Research, Internal Tools, Guide, and Design Operations), exposing you to many perspectives, products, and professional development opportunities. We take professional growth very seriously and make sure you have the freedom and responsibility to become the designer and design leader you want to be.

When joining the Volvo Cars UX Team, you will serve as an expert for your product team and develop ideas for new and enhanced features. You will collaborate with both Engineers and Product Teams as well as different verticals in the UX organization (and in some cases CX) to help set the vision for user experience and make it a reality. You will work closely with user researchers and other experts to test critical assumptions, gathering valuable data and learning about emergent areas of opportunity. You will communicate with multiple stakeholders, internal and external, to advocate for the user based on a deep understanding of our customer needs and pain-points.

Who you are

We are looking primarily for “T-shaped people” to join us in senior, lead- and manager- level roles who have the following strengths:

Design skills: You are a versatile designer who uses a full range of skills—product design, interaction design, and visual design — to ensure you deliver magical experiences to the customer. You have experience delivering end-to-end user experience design artefacts – user flows, stories, wireframes, and prototypes that balance design aesthetics with intuitive functionality for speculative experiences. You are curious and comfortable with prototyping your ideas.

People skills: You are a people person and have a people-focused design mentality. You like to work with others, from ideation and workshopping to delivering concepts in their final form. You are a strong collaborator, who can work with not only design partners, but many other stakeholders from marketing to engineering. You are able to communicate effectively to inspire teams towards action and empathy for the user. You are unafraid to share work-in-progress and thrive on incorporating feedback to improve your process.

Process and research skills: You are constantly looking to hone your design instinct through user feedback, whether through hands-on user research or an A/B test. You have a strong understanding of building and maintaining design libraries or systems. You apply your design knowledge to managing projects and processes. You are able to identify ways in which to incorporate internal and external feedback into your process and that of your colleagues in a thoughtful and systematic way.

Strong candidates for senior roles probably have at least 5 years' relevant experience in high-quality hands-on game, e-commerce, mobile/web application, and/or consumer-focused tech companies or regulated industries like medtech, fintech, and aviation. Those interested in lead and management positions probably have at least eight years of relevant design experience with experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and working with managing stakeholders from different organizations.

Candidates for lead and management positions should be strategic thinkers who are well-versed in the entire design process with a versatile design methodology and toolkit while also capable of being hands-on when needed. They are comfortable working with ambiguity and transforming broad visions into concrete design, leading by example to motivate and gain the trust of internal and external team members and collaborators. They are natural facilitators passionate about teaching and mentoring other designers and know when to trust others to do their job well. They are able to ensure that the team as all the resources and information needed to accomplish their goals and grow. We want people on our team who are:

  • Capable of spotting opportunities that will create value for our customers.

  • Adept at shipping consumer and business products/services that solve real problems and engage end users.

  • Enthusiastic in collecting insights and turning them into strategic recommendations that will drive the businesses of our customers

  • Still hungry to learn more.
