The Role
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Sr. Manufacturing Engineering Manager to create, develop, and take on responsibility for state-of-the-art Battery Cell manufacturing processes and equipment in our R&D and Pilot line Facility – Tesla Kato Road – Fremont California.
The Tesla Battery Cell Manufacturing Engineering Team is not for the faint of heart, after all, changing the world isn’t easy. It is, however, an opportunity to work along-side some of the industry’s top experts on some of the most stimulating challenges of the 21st Century
This role will lead a cross-functional engineering team responsible to invent, develop, scale up, and optimize battery cell assembly manufacturing processes. This newest member of Manufacturing Engineering will be in lockstep with our Design for Manufacturability team, Product Excellence (Quality), Production Engineering, Production, and New Product Introduction (NPI) to take new manufacturing designs and manufacturing process from initial concept, through prototype development, and into full production. As such, we expect this person to take pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
Requirements
What You’ll Bring
- BS/MS Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 15+ years Engineering Leadership Experience
- 5+ years Battery Engineering
- Experience with Early R&D/Pilot Manufacturing Engineering
- Proven problem solver – demonstrated experience of data driven root cause analysis, statistical software (JMP) a plus
- Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products
- Experience with Design for Manufacturability
- Knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA execution
- Experience with equipment and process validation testing
- Experience transitioning products from prototype to production
- Proficiency in mechanical assembly (tolerance analysis, laser welding, mechanical pressing)
- Experience developing automated manufacturing equipment
- Experience with mechanical-electrical/mechatronic systems
- Experience with automation, motion control, PLC programming and HMI design
- Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
- Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
- Knowledgeable about production quality metrics
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
- Exemplary analytical ability, organization skills, and attention to detail
- Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
- Experience in high volume manufacturing involving one or more of these areas is highly desired:
· Automated mechanical assembly
· Advanced Precision Manufacturing
· Advanced Testing Systems / Methods
· Continuous motion machines
· Classified Liquid handling / filling processes
· Battery manufacturing (li-ion or other chemistry)
· Industrial laser processing and/or High-speed welding processes
· Roll to roll winding processes
· High speed web handling and winding processes
