R&D Fabrication Operations Lead Technician – Energy Design Engineering Team

The Energy Design Engineering team is looking to grow a fabrication team to address what has been increasingly long lead times for prototype and early production parts.

He/she will be growing/leading a team to fabricate parts in efforts to support the research, development and implementation of early prototype components and assemblies at the cutting edge of Tesla’s newest Energy products. The “Energy” umbrella now includes residential and industrial energy storage (Powerwall, Powerpack and Megapack), residential solar inverters and vehicle chargers, Superchargers and industrial inverters (ie, all non-vehicle, solar panel/tiles or optimus products). The ideal candidate has a proven record of success in the fabrication of parts and fixtures or other structural assemblies in an engineering/manufacturing environment. He/she must have a broad technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing and quality personnel across a wide variety of tasks. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are a requirement to establish effective working relationships within Tesla.

Requirements

·       HS diploma with a 2-year technical degree preferred

·       5+ years of experience working in an engineering prototype, fabrication and/or machine shop environment

·       3+ years of experience working in an engineering/manufacturing environment

·       Fluent in reading and interpreting 2D drawings and 3D models of parts

·       CAD design experience preferred (Catia, Solidworks)

·       Experience and demonstrated success fabrication, fitting and welding of precision work pieces and assemblies with tight tolerances

·       Above average experience with Manual Mill and Lathe Required

·       MIG and TIG welding experience (including structural steel (>1” thick), sheet metal (steel), aluminum profile, aluminum plate

·       Experience in the fabrication of fixtures required for fitting and assembly of the final work piece

·       Experience and demonstrated success in the use and maintenance of shop equipment and tooling (i.e. drill press, band saw, shear, break, grinders, sanders, plasma cutter, waterjet etc.)

·       Experience in the use of measurement, inspection, and scribing tools (caliper, height gage, scribe, etc.)

·       Familiarity with 5S or similar workplace organization methods

·       Ability to lift 50 lbs.

·       Able to work well under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines

·       Remain engaged, proactive and positive in tough circumstances, owning assignments and taking full accountability for their success

·       Maintain flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments, coping with rapidly changing information

·       Work efficiently and productively in independent and team settings

·       Communicate clearly using excellent written and verbal skills with attention to detail while maintaining a clean and organized workspace

·       Experience with common MS office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

·       Experience with collaboration tools (Jira/Confluence) a plus
