The Role
Tesla’s Vision Automation team is currently seeking a Process Engineer to apply their experience with industrial automation systems to support Tesla’s in-house and purpose-built automated quality inspection systems. The role of the Process Engineer is primarily to be the bridge between technicians and software engineers by learning, mastering, and continuously improving upon their processes.
Tesla’s Vehicle Engineering team, the parent team of Vision Automation, owns the centralized technical aspects of our multi-continent Gigafactory network and product line. The systems we work on include Tesla’s most important programs, such as Cybertruck, cell production, Robotaxi, Optimus, and new factories. The Vision Automation team is responsible for making the factory systems and operations every bit as intelligent and dynamic as the products themselves.
As a Process Engineer on the Vision Automation team, you will work on a wide variety of systems, including inspection training software, monitoring data systems, computer networking, cameras, and various manufacturing execution systems. You will collaborate with operations daily to improve upon their processes to, e.g., set up of new inspections, pick camera locations, create requirements for new software features, and set up lineside industrial PCs. This role will not require writing new software, but it will require an understanding of computer systems. As a core member of a small team that is both building software and operating it on factory floors across Tesla’s Gigafactory network, the ideal candidate will take full advantage of the opportunity be on the bleeding edge of machine learning and industrial automation projects.
  • Work with the global Vision Automation technical operations team to deploy and maintain our fleet of automated inspection cameras and continuously improve our process for doing so, for example, how we change software configurations and maintain technical documentation. 
  • Investigate technical issues with inspections that malfunction, then improve our process to set them up, maintain them, and respond to outages 
  • Train new members of the technical operations team and create/improve upon the onboarding/training processes
  • Use logging, monitoring, and data-based alerting tools to drive process-based operational improvements
  • Own and improve the process for technical operations to work with the manufacturing IT team and NetOps to troubleshoot issues to, e.g., set up virtual computer networks 
  • Work with the Vision Automation software team and product manager to define requirements based on processes that you develop in the field
  • Own the process of selecting hardware and setting up camera networking for automated label scanning, vision inspection systems, and computing hardware, using the engineering team as subject matter experts. 
  • Physically be present where our inspections are, e.g., general assembly, paint, and even suppliers 
  • A study in industrial engineering or a quantitative field or equivalent industry experience
  • Solid understanding of computer networks and server technologies e.g., Internet protocols, shell scripting. 
  • Track record of successful software support and monitoring projects
  • Openness to working with others across the spectrum in manufacturing and software engineering
  • Data comprehension and analysis skills with, e.g., Splunk and SQL
  • Ability to work in an industrial environment
