Industrial Hygienist


  • We are looking for motivated individuals to join the Industrial Hygiene team at Tesla’s Fremont, California factory. This role will focus on creating and streamlining the systems and procedures necessary to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control occupational exposures to chemical and physical hazards. The incumbent’s main duties will consist of working in diverse, cross-functional teams to build out and manage Tesla’s Industrial Hygiene policies, programs, and procedures. Specifically, the position will manage programs related to Plant Operations and Maintenance (POM), Shop Maintenance, Hazardous Waste and Industrial Cleaning, Construction, and Emergency Response teams. In addition, this position will conduct exposure assessments for chemicals and physical hazards including noise across the various factory departments (for example, Paint and Plastics or General Assembly.
  • The position will report to the lead Industrial Hygienist in the Bay Area, California. Primary responsibilities will be in the Fremont factory, but may include supporting other initiatives in the Bay Area.

  • Scope out and manage the completion of exposure assessments and industrial hygiene surveys.
  • Communicate Industrial Hygiene data using Tesla written report templates.
  • Develop structured reports and other written communications of assessments to engage Production, Facilities, Construction, Engineering/Design, Management, and EHS teams.
  • Assist with management of Tesla Respiratory Protection Programs (RPPs).
  • Perform occupational noise assessments and assist with management of Tesla Hearing Conservation Programs (HCPs).
  • Decide appropriate level of engineering, administrative, or PPE control for chemical, radiological, or noise concerns.
  • Serve as an Industrial Hygiene subject matter expert (SME) and provide recommendations as needed.
  • Develop industrial hygiene-related training to the organization; review, customize, and update current training modules.
  • Respond to staff suggestions and complaints related to industrial hygiene.
  • Assist with medical surveillance and maintaining compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local health and safety regulations.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Occupational Health and Safety, or Public Health.
  • At least three to six years’ experience as an Industrial Hygienist or EHS Professional, including experience with quantitative industrial hygiene sampling methods.
  • Experience with Industrial Hygiene concerns related to construction, facilities or equipment maintenance, hazardous waste, and/or incident response (highly desired).
  • Industrial Hygiene program management or support related to welding fumes, lead, asbestos, crystalline silica, and/or legionella.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills. Ability to present data in a structured format for distribution to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Upper-level or expert proficiency with Microsoft excel.
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) (preferred, but not necessary).
  • Industrial Hygiene program management or support related to HCPs or RPPs.
  • Maintaining compliance with Federal, State, or local health and safety regulations.
  • Industrial toxicology or human health risk assessment (preferred, but not necessary).
  • Recommending specific local exhaust or general dilution ventilation controls.
  • Recommending specific PPE related to processes and materials handled.
  • Hazard and risk communication.
