The Team
The R&D Test Systems Engineering (TSE) team is responsible for identifying, designing, building, and commissioning scalable test solutions to accelerate product development cycles by leveraging Tesla’s technology to reduce cost and complexity. TSE is a rare team at Tesla that supports validation of both vehicle and energy programs across engineering and manufacturing. You will have the opportunity to contribute to all aspects of Tesla’s business and really feel the impact of Tesla’s mission of accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
The Role
In this role, you’ll use your technical expertise to execute test plans for highly complex platforms (e.g., validating the interaction of multiple pieces of equipment at the networking, and diagnose highly complex hardware or software issues using your deep knowledge of component design characteristics. You’ll also consult on testing issues with Engineering and vendors and manufacturers.
The right candidate will apply first principles thinking, lead through influence, adhere to organizational processes, and balance competing company/team priorities. You must be a relentless communicator (written and verbal) to clearly state the next steps needed to keep actions on track. Familiarity with tools such as Confluence, SharePoint and JIRA is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Operating, and collaborating with technicians to assist in troubleshooting high-power, high-speed electro-mechanical equipment used for testing electric motors, drive units, vehicles, energy and charging products
  • Commission test equipment and be the bridge handing off fully validated products to internal customers
  • Instrument and design test systems
  • Acquire, maintain, and secure tools and calibrated devices
  • Create and update Bill of Materials of new products and revisions
  • Develop and document test procedures for prototype mechanical/electrical assemblies
  • Prototype of wire harnesses and cables
Requirements
  • Experienced and comfortable working with high voltage and high-speed rotating systems
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals
  • Ability to perform QC on parts made to specific to engineering specifications
  • Materials organization
  • Ability to rework, repair and modify SMT PCB’s down to 0201 package size
  • Basic understanding of analog/digital circuits
  • Ability to understand schematics and manage sourcing of quick turn prototype boards
  • Navigate PCB layout files and create detailed rework instructions if necessary
  • Working experience with various logging and analytics frameworks (Lab VIEW)
  • Ability to test and troubleshoot automation frameworks from the ground up
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Excellent communication, with the ability to collaborate with groups of individuals to deliver solutions
  • Open-minded self-starter with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, technical environment, and to work independently on multiple tasks and projects, adapt, improvise and problem solve
  • Demonstrated record of success working in a high pressure, tight deadline situation
  • Experience working in a fast-paced R&D environment transitioning conceptual designs to launched products
  • Willing to travel domestic and international when necessary
Desired Experience
  • CE/EE or equivalent technical field or work experience.
  • 2+ years demonstrated hands-on work experience in related field/environment with a level of responsibility.
  • Experience with Catia V5 / V6, Altium, Eplan, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Strong system debugging skills
  • Experience with hardware testing and automation
  • Ability to triage and debug hardware systems issues
  • Hands on experience with scripting (Shell, Perl, Tcl or Python)
  • Basic knowledge of lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers)
  • Detail & process oriented with good documentation skills
  • Good communication, organized skills, and desire to learn new challenges
