Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Role Summary:
Rivian's Cell Mixing Team is looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to play a leading role in building Electrode Cell manufacturing lines. You will possess a strong first principles knowledge of Electrical and Automation design and be part of an exceptional team of engineers that are responsible for designing and developing the electrical standards and deployment of Cell manufacturing lines for next generation battery cells. You'll also have a good understanding of Batch, Continuous and Discrete automation, sensors, actuators and manufacturing to string together highly efficient controls design for Cell Electrode Mixing Line. This role will report into the Sr. Manager of Mixing and is located in Palo Alto California. 
 
Responsibilities:
  • Assist with RFQ preparation and review vendor proposals for manufacturing automation equipment.
  • Participate in various equipment buy-offs at vendor sites and at Rivian’s factory for FAT, SAT and Safety.
  • Use first principles to verify sizing of motors, circuit breakers, wire sizes, etc. (i.e. sizing of motor, VFD sizing, Inrush currents, Short circuit current calculations).
  • Liaise with local factory engineering teams and regulatory bodies to understand local electrical codes and apply to manufacturing equipment design (NEC, Hazardous areas, UL Certifications, NEMA Design Guidelines)
  • Participate in development of Electrical and Automation standards and specifications by feeding back lessons-learned and gaps from each project to ensure that future projects will run smoother.
  • Ensure proper implementation of Machine Functional Safety.
  • Experience developing electrical schematics using EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical or similar.
  • Familiarity with programming PLC, HMI, SCADA and MES software. Siemens TIA portal programming would be ideal.
  • Assist in the installation and commissioning of new production lines as they land at the factory. 

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS Electrical Engineering or equivalent with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Previous experience in Electrical Control Panel design
  • Experience developing electrical schematics using EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical or similar.
  • Hands on experience with configuration of electrical systems (VFD control, Commissioning of industrial electrical equipment)
  • Familiarity with programming Safety PLC, HMI, SCADA and MES software.
  • Experience in Electrical codes that apply to manufacturing equipment and machine functional safety.
  • Excellent team and person-to-person communication skills.
