As a Science team member, you will work in a dynamic environment where we embrace moving quickly to build the world’s best transportation. Data Scientists take on a variety of problems ranging from shaping critical business decisions to building algorithms that power our internal and external products. We’re looking for passionate, driven Data Scientists to take on some of the most interesting and impactful problems in ridesharing.

As a Data Scientist, Decisions, you will leverage data and rigorous, analytical thinking to shape the company’s product and business decisions. You will identify and scope opportunities, shape priorities, recommend solutions, design experiments, and measure impact. You will bring a quantitative mindset to decision-making in partnership with the organization's product, business, and operations stakeholders. 

Specifically, this role is in the Map Data Team. The Map Data’s mission is to build high quality basemaps for Lyft. The team enables this by collecting map information from sources like telematics and feedback, building detectors for map errors, curating errors, and building the resulting map.

Sample problems that we solve:

  • What is good map quality?
  • How to best find, model, and predict road closures
  • What is the impact of road closures in terms of false positive and false negative detections? 
  • Where is speed limit coverage good enough?
  • Where are new roads that need to be mapped located?

Responsibilities:

  • Leverage data and analytic frameworks to identify opportunities for efficiency of scaling our contributions to Open Street Map
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and designers to translate data insights into decisions and action
  • Creatively turn product feedback into metrics for measuring experiences of our customers to.
  • Identify new strategies for developing map data that solve customer pain points with simplicity and clarity 

Experience:

  • Degree in a quantitative field such as statistics, economics, applied math, operations research, engineering, GIS, or relevant work experience. 3+ years of industry experience in dealing with large data sets and delivering insights and reporting based.  Titles include Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Business Intelligence, 
  • Proficiency in SQL – able to write structured and efficient queries on large data sets
  • Experience in programming, especially with data science and visualization libraries in Python or R
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate with and influence cross-functional partners
