Cruise is looking for a Staff Systems Engineer to support strategic engineering decisions. Help us better understand human and AV safety performance, develop safety methodologies leveraging the latest research, and model our AV’s capabilities in places and markets where we’ve yet to operate.

In this position, you’ll have the chance to work at the intersection of hardware, software, and AV technology and have a hand in nearly every component of a technically sophisticated autonomous system.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Define success criteria from ambiguous problem statements

  • Lead and perform analysis of AV and human driving data to characterize safety performance, including non-collision safety-related event analysis, and detailed collision modeling

  • Develop and perform analyses modeling AV capabilities in new cities and serving new customer use cases

  • Provide guidelines and expertise on new safety developments from both industry and relevant safety research areas

  • Lead and communicate data analyses, trade studies, and safety analyses that provide partner teams and leadership (at the director and VP level) with all the information needed to develop and continuously improve the systems function/performance, technical strategy, and technical talent needs

  • Mentoring fellow Systems Engineers and fostering a positive, collaborative work environment

What you must have:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Transportation Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or another related field.

  • 10+ years of industry experience in systems analysis, data analysis, statistical analysis, systems engineering, robotics or other related fields

  • Significant statistical experience working with data-intensive on-line systems; examples include real-time metrics tracking systems and A/B testing methodologies

  • Proficiency with Python and SQL

  • Ability to adapt and operate under ambiguity

  • Strong critical thinking skills – interpret what the data is telling us, and which analyses will reveal impactful conclusions

  • Strong technical and non-technical communication skills

  • A track record of leading cross-functional initiatives

Bonus points!

  • Experience leading production software development projects and setting coding standards.

  • Experience with robotics, autonomous vehicles, vehicle development or ADAS development

  • Experience in transportation safety modeling or road networks & vehicle route planning

  • Experience developing tools for processing large datasets

  • Strong background in autonomous vehicle safety assessments

The salary range for this position is $170,000 – 250,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
