What you’ll be doing:

The Operational Safety team assures safety in every operational stage including our closed course testing, validation testing on-road and our commercial driverless services. Our work starts early in development with systems engineering, operations and engineering to drive human factors and product safety into the system design and requirements through hazard analyses and continues with ongoing risk assessment and monitoring activities.  This includes additional focus on operations to ensure we develop effective training, processes and procedures for the operators of our fleet.  The Senior Operational Safety Engineer is a fundamental part of our ability to scale responsibly and satisfy our safety targets.  

  • Perform safety risk analysis and assessment for safety critical product features and operations activities using quantitative and qualitative methods.

  • Contribute to product and operational risk assessment methodology development

  • Own end to end hazard identification and risk assessment process improvements

  • Develop concept of operations and functional requirements with acceptance criteria to inform the development operational procedures, training materials and operational changes.  

  • Develop methods to capture data useful to monitor key safety behavior indicators and performance metrics against performance thresholds on an ongoing basis

  • Articulate safety reports, summaries, and recommendations to risk owners and other executives

  • Support Risk Working Group activities and requests for safety assessment, process improvements and risk reduction opportunities.

  • Drive the development and assist with the execution of an operational safety audit program strategy to ensure effective operational safety controls implementation across all geographies, programs, and modes of operation.

  • Support onsite audits as needed and review field audit data to ensure product and operational safety controls are implemented and effective in the Cruise system. 

  • Develop findings and corrective action plans to eliminate exposure to these risks in the Cruise system and at all sites.

  • Serve as the operational safety representative in urgent fleet safety concerns or severe incident crisis management response for off-hours emergencies.

What you must have:

  • Familiarity with risk assessment methodologies 

  • Expertise in safety analysis for autonomous vehicles or similar industry

  • Enjoy working in a collegial yet highly fast-paced and effective culture.

  • Comfort with ambiguity; bias to action.

  • Excellent judgment and ability to remain unbiased and independent throughout all safety activities

  • Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming an expert in your domain

  • Proven experience at communicating data driven decisions to leadership

  • Strong project management skills to coordinate multiple risk assessment work streams simultaneously 

  • Proficiency in extracting insights from and applying expert-provided data in the form of quantitative risk assessments, reliability analysis, and/or statistical data analysis

  • Familiarity with requirement management systems

Bonus Points!

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Safety, Human Factors or a related technical degree

  • Proven track record of root cause analysis in complex human factors and SW/HW systems

  • Demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with the operations team and influence continuous improvement for systems safety.

  • Expertise in Human Factors or Organizational Performance

  • Experience within an operating Safety Management System

  • Understanding of System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and its application

The salary range for this position is $115,600 – 170,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
